AUSTRALIAN STANDARD STEEL COILS

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian standard steel sheet strip - Hot - dip zinc - coated or aluminium/zinc - coated

1. SCOPE AND GENERAL OF AUSTRALIAN STANDARD.

This standard specifies requirements for hot - dip zinc - coated or aluminium/zinc - coated seel sheet and strip, supplied in thickness up to and including 5.0 mm
Australian standard specifies requirements for steel grades, coating classes and surface finish, as follows:
 a. formability grades of steel
 b. Structual grades of steel
 c. Classes of zinc coating, including differential coating.
 d. Classes of zinc coating converted to zinc/iron alloy
 e. classes of aluminium/zinc alloy coating.
 f. Surface finish.

NOTES:
- Advice and recommendations on information to be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry or order.
- Alternative means for determining compliance with this Standard are given blow
- The specified requirements apply to the full length and full width of the product supplied, unless otherwise indicated

2. SOME DEFINITIONS OF AUSTRALIAN STANDARD.

For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
 - Wthat is the Batch
One grade of the same product form and thickness processed under similar conditions.
- What is the Coating mass
The total amount of coating on both surfaces of the steel base, measured in grams per square metre of sheet or strip. In the case of differential coatings, these surfaces are stated separately.
NOTE: The coating thickness is not subject to specification. The approximate coating thickness for various coating classes.
One surface single spot coating mass
The minium coating mass on any surface of any one of the three spcimens used for the triple spot test.
  Single spot coating mass
The minium coating mass on any one of the three specimens for the triple representing the original cross-section of the sheet or strip.

- What is the Coating type

  Zinc coating
Essentially a hot - dip coating of zinc incorporating minor additions of control elements only ( Type Z ) or a coating of zinc converted to a zinc/iron alloy ( Type ZF )
NOTE: A type Z coating normally provided with a chromate passivation treatment, not oiled, Atype ZF coating is normally lightly phosphted, or oiled

   Aluminium/Zinc alloy coating

A hot - dip coating compossed of essentially 50% to 60% aluminium with the remaninder zinc but incorporating minor additions of control elements. ( type AZ )
NOTE: A type AZ coating is normally provided with a chromate passivation treatment in conjuction with a thin clear organic coating, not olied

- What is the differential coating

A coating which has a substantially different coating mass on each side of the steel sheet or strip.
  Sheet
a flat rooled product of any width and thickness coated by hot dipping and suppled in cut lengths
Trip
A flat rolled product of any width and thickness coated by hot dipping and supplied in coil form.

Standard Specification for Steel Coil, 55 % Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated by the HotDip Process

Standard Specification for Steel Sheet, 55 % Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated by the HotDip Process

1. Classification of Aluminum - zinc Alloy - Coated by the Hot Dip process (Galvalume - GL)

The material is available in several designations, as follows:
- Commercial Steel—CS Types A, B, and C,
- Forming Steel—FS,
- Drawing Steel—DS,
- High Temperature Steel—HTS, and
- Structural Steel—SS.

Structural steel is available in several grades based on mechanical properties. Structural Steel Grade 50 [340] is available in three classes based on tensile strength. Structural Steel Grade 80 [550] is available in two classes, based on chemistry. The product is available in several coating weights
[masses] with the coating designation in accordance with this table

 2. Mechanical Properties of Aluminum - zinc Alloy - Coated by the Hot Dip process (Galvalume - GL)

Many interrelated factors that affect the ability of a steel to cold form over a given radius under shop conditions. These factors include thickness, strength level, degree of restraint, relationship to rolling direction, chemistry, and base metal microstructure. Lists the suggested minimum inside radii for 90° cold bending for Structural Steels. They presuppose “hard way” bending (bend axis parallel to the rolling direction) and reasonably good shop forming practices. Where possible, the use of larger radii or “easy way” bends are recommended for improved performance.
Fabricators should be aware that cracks may initiate upon bending a sheared or cold-worked edge. This is not considered to be a fault of the steel but is rather a function of the induced localized cold-work zone.
